A great way to get started with oil painting, is to get a beginner’s Oil Painting Set. They can be purchased at online retailers, or you can usually find one at your local art supply store. My choice of one of the brands that offers these kits is the ones made by Windsor & Newton.

Once you determine whether oil painting is something you really like and want to invest in, Winsor & Newton has other oil painting sets that include larger size tubes. These sets offer a few different color combinations chosen from the 49 colors that they offer.  I tried a few of their sets and became familiar with the basic group of colors, and then the ones that are most-often chosen.  I then added a few new colors at a time, which gave me an opportunity to really try out each color, as well as to learn how to mix my oil paints from a smaller selection of base colors. It was exciting each time I tried out a newcolor, and saw how it could enhance my my painting by giving me a wider selection of colors on my palette to choose from.

Winsor & Newton paints come in two grades of oil paint colors for different skill levels. The ‘Winton’ line for students & beginners, includes a selection of the most used oil colors made from good-quality moderately priced pigments, and work well for artists who want to try oil painting without a big commitment in cost. The Winsor & Newton ‘Artist Oil Colors’ line  is a better-quality pigment, made for accomplished or professional artists. They offer superior oil painting pigments at competitive prices.
