Oil Painting of two young girls walking in the rain wearing brightly-colored raincoats. I was drawn not only to the bright colors but also to this moment of childhood friendship which frames this memory in a way that is so familiar. This was actually a painting I had thought was finished back when I originally painted in in 1998, however, when I began painting again after a 15 year hiatus to care for foster children and our adopted son…I decided that the grass needed more definition. I was much happier with the result when I reworked it in 2014.

Artist Oil Painting : At the Fair

Oil Painting of a young girl wearing a denim sundress and carrying a big-red balloon. The entire scene complete with a crowd of fair-goers’ in the background; conjured up for me a ‘snapshot in time’, of what may seem to be an event of a bygone era; yet in northern Maine can be found during almost every weekend in the summer. I was especially drawn to the vibrant red of the balloon in the photo, and the innocence in her sweet expression; as well as the opportunity to render some wonderful colors that appeared in the denim which had some beautiful colors of reflected light in the shadow.

Oil Painting of a young boy tossing a penny into a fountain. While driving on Cape Cod, I spotted this charming little boy doing something that struck me as such a definitive act of childhood innocence, and I felt compelled to re-create it on canvas….making & believing in wishes. With his mother’s permission, I was able to capture this image which makes me smile whenever I see it.

This is an example of one of the ship paintings, (a “schooner”), which I sold in my then, husband’s family’s antique shop. Similar paintings of different types of sailing vessels were also sold at auctions held on the islands of Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard, as modern renderings of these ships.

I utilized images of different sailing vessels, known as “schooners” and “clipper ships”, applying varied backgrounds… (i.e. ocean, sky); as was typical of the paintings of that era. I often added local lighthouses found on Cape Cod, & the islands of Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard. Detail was paid to provide as many of the authentic details, such as; rigging, deck appointments, and even crew members; (many times the sea captain of a particular vessel can be seen holding a telescope scanning the sea).

“L.L. Bean Scene – Red canoe”

Finding inspiration for a painting can be occur almost anywhere. “Red Canoe” was actually inspired by a photo I saw in an L.L. Bean summer catalog. The bright colors and feeling of absolute joy in this snapshot portraying childhood innocence was irresistible…I just had to see how all these elements would come together with my paintbrush.

Achieving a balance between what is contained in the photograph and how much detail and clarity of the forms I wanted to include, was the goal I had in mind when choosing to paint this scene. Back in the beginning of when I first painting, I had always incorporated a great deal of detail; attempting to approach the point of ‘photo realism’ which then led to the question how closely I could replicate them. What I realized, after I was comfortable that I had achieved that level of detail…was that there are many more ways of approaching a subject. I decided to really explore when it seemed necessary to add that level of detail by looking at when, if not included; those elements would be missed.

While perfecting techniques is important, I decided that being able to do so was not the only part of painting that would fulfill my need to create work that would express my own style and vision. I wanted to be able to show how subjects appear to me using color, light AND form. Although I can appreciate the work that goes into creating a photograph that enhances the products L.L. Bean was trying to sell, I wanted to take the composition and interpret it the way I ‘saw’ it and the feeling it evoked. This was done by choosing where to include the most detail…such as in the children’s faces, and when to represent elements in a less-detailed and more impressionist manner, to give the detailed areas more emphasis.

“18 Wheeler Freightliner Truck Cab”

Commissioned Oil Painting ‘portrait’ of an 18-Wheeler truck cab. When I moved to northern Maine, I never expected to be doing ‘portraits’ of artwork from photo of this type of subject… (i.e. an 18-wheeler truck cab); however, when I was commissioned to do one for a friend that I met here, I decided to give it a try. What I discovered & still remember while I was painting it, were the unexpected techniques I learned by fabricating textures; such as the chrome & metal elements of the truck body. I apply this concept whenever I am considering a new project, since I never know what opportunities to learn something new may exist, that may not be immediately apparent to me.

Artist Karin Portfolio : Family Folk Art Portrait (Commissioned)

“Family Folk Art Portrait”

I painted this portrait while living on Cape Cod, after a family member came across a photo of an old folk art painting of a family in the 1900’s. She had the idea of replicating the painting, however, replacing the faces in the original; with the faces of herself, her husband, and their 3 children instead. This became an extremely fun project, since I knew all the family members well; & at times I even felt a strange connection to the subjects as I was painting them. (I joke to others about this, saying that there were times while I was working on it, when I felt that the subjects might actually reach out of the canvas, grab my paintbrush; and attempt to make corrections).

I felt compelled to do this oil painting of this quaint scene of brightly painted mailboxes, after traveling past it so often on my way home on Route 6A in Brewster, MA on Cape Cod. There were actually several more mailboxes in the same row on the road…. however, the camera could only capture the four you see clearly enough. I chose the most interesting and colorful ones for their composition value.

“At The Fair”

Oil Painting of a young girl wearing a lightly-colored denim summer dress, and holding a big-red balloon. The entire scene complete with a crowd of fair-goers’ in the background; for me conjured up a ‘snapshot in time’, of what may seem to be an event of a bygone era; yet in northern Maine can be found almost every weekend of the summer.
